This course teaches the fundamentals of paint-making with powdered pigments. The first course covers the multicultural history of manuscript illumination, pigment history, material sources, and the first steps of paint-mixing. During the second class-session, participants will finish making tempera, and illuminate an image during class. Images for practicing illumination will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own from a previous print or calligraphic project.

*Vegans and those with aural sensitivities please note: we use eggs and the process can be noisy. The powdered pigments used in this process can be toxic if inhaled; masks will be provided.
