Coptic binding is an essential and versatile part of a binder’s repertoire. The book opens flat to form a very usable journal or sketchbook for many applications and can be made of traditional or non-traditional materials. Our first version will use wooden covers with the two-needle sewing. For the second, we will wrap book board in decorative paper and learn the four-needle sewing with two colors of thread. Students will learn to use the curved needle technique and will keep the needles for their further use. This historical binding was developed during the second to third century in Egypt. Adapting the technique of interlacing threads in carpet making, a chain or link stitch was used to bind the sections together. It is still used in some parts of Ethiopia today.
