Learn how to engage in a relationship with a dead mentor to improve your skills, stretch your creative boundaries, and answer questions about your own process. Two reasons to choose a dead mentor: you do not have to pay them, and they will not argue with you. That statement is silly, practical, and true. It helps to choose a well-documented artist or writer who also wrote about their process, but that is not necessary. Participants will look at the mentor’s life and work choices, the historical context of their completed work and written philosophy, and come to new conclusions through the lens of their own past and current life and work. That is key; the personal lens brought to the looking. This strategy is useful for anyone who wants to widen their view of what is possible in their work and the work they mentor.
