How can new digital technology enhance analog art practices? This three-part virtual workshop will investigate how a laser cutter can benefit the contemporary book artist’s practice. In the first part of this workshop, work with Philadelphia-based book artist Amanda D’Amico to learn how to bind a simple, hardcover book that has been shaped by a laser cutter. In the second part of the workshop, get an introduction to laser cutting and creating laser-ready files from Sarah Pike, artist and owner of FreeFall Laser in North Adams, Massachusetts, and create simple vector files for the laser cutter. Design your own shaped books using simple vector files and Sarah will laser cut the pieces, shipping them to each student for the final session. The final part of the workshop will assist students in assembling their own laser-shaped books. Finish the workshop with two completed books and a basic understanding of laser cutting for artists. Some previous experience with book arts is recommended; previous experience with laser cutting is not required. Please note: Supplies will be shipped to the address provided at registration.

What you'll need to participate: For this highly participatory virtual workshop we recommend you join on a laptop or desktop computer with a camera and microphone, if possible. You will receive step-by-step instructions for downloading Zoom (it’s free!) and accessing the workshop online approximately 2 days before the workshop’s start date. Additional technology requirements are listed here with a list of supplies and recommended prep. The $35 supply fee charged with each registration covers a materials kit that will be shipped to the address provided at registration.
