Learn the classic Coptic stitch in two variations: the two-needle and the four-needle technique. Learn to cover boards with decorative papers to make a small blank journal that opens flat for ease in use. The coptic binding was developed during the second to third century in Egypt and was used throughout the Islamic world and Eastern Christendom (Europe), and is still used in some parts of Ethiopia today. This style was adapted from the technique of interlacing threads in carpet making, creating a chain or link stitch to bind the sections together.
