Most page-making computer programs are designed for single-section pamphlets, with little room for creative artist's book applications. Participants in this workshop will be shown various approaches the instructor has developed using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create limited edition digital and hand-printed books. Determining an overall design that expresses cohesive content will lead to incorporating computer skills and techniques into students' individual books. Various techniques will be explored to create templates to lay out accordion books and other folded structures, as well as sewn-section bindings that involve printing on both sides of paper. Individual pages with text and imagery can derive from a wide variety of computer- and hand-generated imagery, including photography, collage, drawing and painting. Demonstrations and samples of other artists' books will introduce advanced techniques for incorporating digital output with hand-printed processes. Participants will be using Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator programs (or the full Creative Suite) and should have workable knowledge of one of them, and access to a scanner/printer. The class will include a mix of the instructor's group presentations and demonstrations with individual meetings.
